Edit /boot/config.txt (maybe via “$ sudo nano /boot/config.txt”) and add the following two lines:

framebuffer_width = 1024 framebuffer_height = 768 |
Other sources suggest also to tinker with the hdmi_mode, but for my Raspberry Pi 3 this was sufficient.
